Steel building roofs
Warehouses, factories and farm buildings carry their roof sheeting on purlins spanning between the main frames. Z purlins lapped over the rafters run continuous, and sag rods keep them straight while the sheets go on. Z Purlin, C Purlin and Sag Rods cover it.
Walls, cladding and openings
Wall cladding hangs on girts, or side rails, fixed across the columns, and every door and window needs a framed opening. The same C and Z sections do both jobs, hung from the eaves with sag rods. C Purlin, Z Purlin and Sag Rods cover it.
Pipe, duct and cable support
Mechanical and electrical contractors hang pipes, ducts and cable trays on strut channel trapezes and brackets. Channel nuts grip the lips anywhere along the slot, so supports go up without drilling or welding. Universal Strut Channel / 'C' Strut Channel and Accessories cover it.
Equipment frames and racks

Common questions about purlins and strut.
When is a Z purlin used instead of a C purlin?
Z purlins nest into each other, so they can be lapped or sleeved over the rafters and run continuous across several bays. C purlins do not nest, so they suit single spans, eaves, openings and framing. Many buildings use both.
What purlin sizes does GV source?
C purlins from 3 to 14 in (75 to 300 mm) deep and Z purlins from 4 to 14 in (100 to 350 mm) deep, in 10G to 16G (1.3 to 3.15 mm) steel. Flange and lip sizes follow the buyer's section table.
Which steel grades and coatings are available for purlins?
GV sources purlins to your design standard: ASTM A653 in the US. Finish options include plain, galvanized to G90, Z275 or Z350, or with red oxide primer.
What do sag rods do?
Sag rods tie purlins or girts together between the main frames so they stay straight and upright under the sheeting. GV sources them in 1/2 in and 5/8 in (12 and 16 mm) diameter, 3 to 10 ft (900 mm to 3 m) long, straight or cranked, with nuts and washers.
What strut channel sizes are available?
The channel is 1-5/8 in (41 mm) wide in 13/16 in, 1-5/8 in, 2-7/16 in and 3-1/4 in (21, 41, 61 and 81 mm) depths, in 12G to 16G (2.5 to 1.5 mm) steel. It comes plain or slotted, in 10 and 20 ft (3 and 6 m) lengths.
Which channel nuts fit the strut?
Spring nuts, plain channel nuts and toothed nuts in 1/4 in to 1/2 in (M6 to M12) threads. The nut turns into the channel, and its grooves lock under the in-turned lips when the bolt is tightened.
