GV Steels Cross Arms

Posts & trellising

Cross Arms

Cross Arms bolt to your vertical posts to hold multiple trellis wires at staggered heights, building the multi-level canopy geometry that table grapes, raisins, kiwifruit and orchard systems are trained on. The arm extends out from the post, creating attachment points for fruit-bearing and foliage wires positioned overhead. Specify length, gauge and finish to match your system's canopy architecture.

Definition

Wire-support brackets for multi-level trellis

Steel L, T or angled brackets that bolt to your vertical posts to hold multiple fruit-bearing wires at staggered heights — the primary structural component in T-trellis, DOV open-gable, pergola and kiwifruit T-bar systems.

Product form

Length, gauge and finish

6–72 inches in 12, 13, and 14 gauge (2.5, 2.3, 2.0 mm); plain or zinc-plated finish. The 6–72 inch range supports commercial applications from small table-grape spans (4–6 feet) through raisin DOV open-gable geometry (6 feet wide) to kiwifruit T-bar and pergola multi-arm configurations.

Assembly and load

U-bolt attachment and wire support

Mounted to posts via U-bolt clamps, with wires clipped at staggered heights along the arm's length. Capacity depends on gauge, material and how securely the arm is attached.

Also known as

Also called crossarm in the US. Spanish-speaking crews call it travesaño.

Common applications

Where it is used.

Application

Table grape T-trellis canopy geometry

Mount cross-arms to carrier posts in your T-trellis row, letting bilateral cordons diverge horizontally along the arm. Wires clipped at staggered heights carry upward-growing shoots and fruit through the multi-tier canopy that T-trellis is built around.

Application

Raisin DOV and open-gable V-configuration

Mount cross-arms at the top of the V structure in a DOV open-gable system to hold multiple fruiting wires that diverge symmetrically from the centerline — arm length is what lets the canopy fan out wide enough for canes to dry in place.

Application

Overhead pergola and kiwifruit T-bar systems

Pergola systems use multiple cross-arms per post to build a dense horizontal wire framework, with fruit-bearing wires attached at staggered heights along each arm to spread the canopy across the full overhead space. Kiwifruit T-bar systems mount the arms horizontally at the post to form the support frame for bilateral overhead training, with wire spacing along the arm setting the canopy width the fruit load hangs from.

Questions answered

Common questions.

What else are cross arms called?
In the US, they are called crossarms. In Spanish, they are travesaño. They are spacing components in vineyard and orchard systems.
What lengths do cross arms come in for vineyard and orchard systems?
Cross arms for vineyard and orchard systems are supplied in lengths from 6" to 72" to serve different trellis spacing designs and row geometries. Available finishes are plain, painted and galvanized.
Vineyard & Orchard Systems

Wire-support brackets in multi-level canopy systems

Cross arms create the multi-level wire-support geometry central to T-trellis, open-gable, pergola and T-bar systems. Table grape, raisin, kiwifruit and specialty orchard systems each specify their own arm lengths and attachment spacing to reach their intended canopy architecture. Attachment method — U-bolt, welded or pinned — depends on your system design and post configuration.
